As part of the Summer Business Academy, we hope to impart to our participants knowledge and inspiration from real entrepreneurs. Our guest faculty includes both undergraduate business leaders and adult entrepreneurs who have grown a business to maturity.

Hugo Van Vuuren, the xfund

Hugo is a founding partner of Xfund. He serves as an Expert-in-Residence at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and on the Board of Directors of Work-Bench, the enterprise technology growth accelerator in New York City that he co-founded at the MIT Media Lab. Hugo was on the founding team of two startups backed by Y Combinator and was a Founding Director of Artscience Labs, headquartered in Paris and in Boston. He led The Laboratory @ Harvard, served as a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and has won TED, PopTech, and Aspen fellowships for his research and entrepreneurial work. Hugo earned his A.B. and Master in Design Studies degrees from Harvard University.

tom eisenmann, harvard business school

Thomas R. Eisenmann is the Howard H. Stevenson professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School and faculty co-chair of the HBS Rock Center for Entrepreneurship. He studies the management of new ventures. Eisenmann teaches an MBA elective course, Product Management 101, in which students specify and supervise development of a software application. In recent years, Eisenmann has served as Chair of Harvard's MBA Elective Curriculum and as course head of The Entrepreneurial Manager, taught to all 900 first-year MBA students. Eisenmann also created the MBA elective Launching Technology Ventures, which examines challenges that entrepreneur encounter when starting and scaling information technology businesses.

Tuan ho, philo

Tuan Ho founded Philo in a Harvard dorm room in 2009 with his best friend and co-founder Nick Krasney. Philo was originally built to solve a very simple problem: build a system to watch TV anywhere on a campus that didn’t have cable for its students. Tuan now guides the company’s vision and culture, bringing a passion for Philo’s technology and product, which seeks to define the standard of television for a new generation of viewers. Tuan studied Chemistry and Physics at Harvard, graduating with honors in 2009.

Dan Andrew, Trademark Tours

Daniel Andrew graduated from Harvard in 2007 with a B.A. in Government. While a Harvard student, Dan founded The Hahvahd Tour described by the New York Times as "a theatrical 70-minute crash course in Harvard history”. This tour grew into Trademark Tours LLC, the leading tour operator at Harvard.  In 2011, Dan co-founded a second company, City Wine Tours LLC, bringing his knowledge of the touring industry to wine-lovers. Dan serves as CEO of both his companies. Dan himself is a contributor to publications including Entrepreneur.com, The Boston Globe, and Business News Daily.  Dan is a board member of the Harvard Square Business Association and is proud to call Harvard Student Agencies a critical corporate partner.

Educational Advisers

john richards, hgse

John Richards is a senior executive at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in technology and media with extensive experience in business development and strategic planning. He is an internationally recognized leader in merging media and technology with educational needs, and has designed and published award-winning educational materials in mathematics, science, and social studies. Previously, he was President of the JASON Foundation for Education, and Senior Vice President and General Manager of Turner Learning, Inc., the education arm of Turner Broadcasting. Dr. Richards received his doctorate in Philosophy at SUNY Buffalo in 1971, and conducted post-doctoral research at SUNY in Mathematics in 1972.

Ann koufman fredrick, cs4ed

Ann is CS4Ed's expert in development, implementation and scaling of K12 innovative programming, and has 30 years of experience in technology integration, curriculum design, learning assessment, and professional development. Ann was formerly Deputy Superintendent for Teaching & Learning in Newton (MA) Public Schools. She also served in several district leadership positions, including Superintendent in in Watertown (MA) and Director of Curriculum, Assessment and Technology in Marblehead (MA). She began her educational leadership career as Director of Technology Initiatives at the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents. She has coordinated and worked on state and national educational technology

Student Entrepreneurs

brian truong, hellotoken

Brian is the Founder of HelloToken, a monetization platform for online publishers that utilizes survey micropayments. For the past two years, Brian was an Investment Professional at Rothenberg Ventures, where he managed their Boston deal flow and portfolio support. He previously worked for The Blackstone Group in their Secondary Private Equity group and Bessemer Venture Partners in their Healthcare Investment group. Prior to that, Brian was the Founder Apprentice at Signet Education, where he helped lead product development for KarmaNotes, and a Consultant for Protomex Life Sciences where he helped the team with fundraising, culminating in $1 mn raised. He graduated from Harvard in 2015 with an AB in Human Evolutionary Biology and Computer Science. While at school, he was the President of both Harvard Ventures and the Harvard Biotechnology Association.

zaki djemal, tradr

Zaki Djemal is cofounder and CEO of tradr, an application for users to browse, buy, and sell used and local goods in their neighborhoods by simply swiping right and left on suggested items. Tradr provides an interface for users to upload an item, contact a buyer, and negotiate within seconds.  Before tradr, Zaki worked as a product manager, humanitarian aid worker and journalist. He graduated from Harvard College cum laude with a degree in behavioral economics. tradr is currently incubating at the Harvard Innovation Lab.

Nina Hooper, The holistic

Nina is a rising senior, originally from Melbourne Australia. She studies astrophysics, but outside of the classroom she has a true passion for healthy eating that is sustainable for the environment. The lack of healthy dessert options fueled her desire to start The Holistic, an upcoming health food company. The Holistic specializes in products that taste great and resemble familiar favorites but from alternative ingredients making them much better for you; its main product line is Feel Good Cake, which are high-protein vegan cupcakes produced with chickpeas and avocados.  Nina launched a successful Kickstarter for The Holistic, grew the company to a team of managers and bakers, and is excited to expand the FGC brand in the upcoming months.
